Microsoft Introduces Windows 10 Creators Update Path for Older Windows Phone Devices

Microsoft has started rolling out the Windows 10 Creators Update to mobile users today. The feature update is available for Windows 10 Mobile users on the Release Preview Ring. Customers will now be updating to the build, provided their devices are compatible. It seems even unsupported handsets can make the Creators Update leap.

In a note made on the Feedback Hub, Microsoft says users on unsupported devices can update. They can get the Windows 10 Creators Update through the Release Preview Ring:

If you are a Windows Insider on an unsupported device, you can stay on the Windows 10 Creators Update and receive Cumulative Updates via the Release Preview ring.

However, you do so at your own risk as it’s unsupported. If you are on one of these unsupported devices and in the Fast or Slow ring, you will need to switch to the Release Preview ring via Settings > Update & security > Windows Insider Program.

We know that many Insiders are disappointed to see their device is no longer supported. We looked at feedback from our Windows Insiders and realized that we would not be able to provide the best possible experience for our customers on many of these older devices.

That helped us determine which devices we support for the Windows 10 Creators Update. We are continually listening to your feedback to provide the best experience for ALL of our customers.”

The list of fully eligible handsets for the Creators Update is limited. It includes Microsoft’s own Lumia 950/950 XL, Lumia 650, Lumia 550, and Lumia 640/640 XL smartphones.

Other compatible devices are the Alcatel IDOL 4S, Alcatel OneTouch Fierce XL, HP Elite x3, Lenovo 503LV, Trinity NuAns Neo, MCJ Madosma Q601, and the VAIO VPB051.

So, it is certainly good that Microsoft is giving Windows Phone users on older device a change to get their hands on the Creators Update.
