Microsoft Event Announced for May 2: New Surface and Windows Cloud Coming?

Microsoft has announced it is holding a hardware and software event in New York City on May 2. This spring event has been rumoured for several weeks, with speculation around what devices Microsoft will discuss. The company is now sending out press invites for via email for the event. Report suggest that the event is not going to unveil any new products like the Surface Phone or a new Surface Pro device. The hardware and software event will get underway 9:30AM ET on May 2nd. The invite leads with “Learn what’s next” which offers a subtle hint that the event will put a focus on education. Windows Cloud will probably lead the charge in terms of software, but what about the hardware. We’re still expecting Microsoft to unveil at least one piece of new hardware, but it’s not likely to have a successor to the Surface Book ready just yet. It’s also possible Microsoft may take this opportunity to reveal the hardware design of its upcoming Xbox Project Scorpio, just ahe...

Former Microsoft Managers Create Nextio, a LinkedIn Rival

Two former Microsoft managers have set out to challenge their ex-employer’s LinkedIn service with the Thursday launch of a new professional networking site — and this one pays users to reply to recruiting messages. This networking website offers a twist on the format. Last year, Microsoft acquired LinkedIn in a $26 billion deal to boost its enterprise network and data. The Bellevue-based company was founded by Anoop Gupta and Aravind Bala. Both were former managers of Microsoft. Gupta worked as a technology assistant to Bill Gates and is a noted scientist, while Bala is a former engineer who was a manager at the company. As a new company, Nextio currently has six employees and has raised $2.2 million from early investment rounds. Microsoft announced last year that Gupta and Bala had left the company to focus on creating a start-up. The creation of Nextio was inspired by their time with Microsoft. As they would often recruit new engineers from networking serv...

Microsoft Xbox Scorpio Dev Kit Hardware Revealed

Last week, Microsoft officially revealed the key specifications for the Project Scorpion / Xbox Scorpio console. We now have a very good idea what the Xbox Scorpio will look like. The dev kits feature some difference, including an OLED information display on the front. These kits give developers the early version of the console to begin creating games for the device. In terms of design, we would guess these dev kits are very close to the final design of Project Scorpio. A closer look at the hardware shows the XDK (Xbox Development Kit) branding. Looking at the design, this carries a close resemblance to the current Xbox One S. That makes plenty of sense, although there will undoubtedly be some aesthetic tweaks. There are crucial differences to note, such as the disc tray located in black lower half of the console. Speaking to Gamasutra, Kevin Gammill, group program manager for the Xbox Core Platform said: “I kid you not, I go to first-party studios, I go ...

Today is the first time that can happen. As with the Anniversary Update last August, Microsoft is rolling out the Creators Update in stages. This basically means the upgrade will be sent out over the next weeks to three months. In other words, some users may be lucky enough to get it today, while others will have to wait. Microsoft Skype UWP for Windows 10 Gets Important Update

Skype UWP is now out of preview for all Windows 10 users with the launch of version 11.13.133.This is a release for all Windows 10 users on Mobile and PC, it is not a Windows Insider build. The biggest change made to Skype UWP in build 11.13.133 is a new contacts system. Microsoft says it has simplified the way users connect with their contacts. Now Skype will show mutual contacts shared within the People app on a device. It is possible to turn this setting off within the app. Another change is the addition of searchable chats within the Messaging app. My including keyboard shortcuts, Skype UWP users now get easier choices more quickly. Extending the Messaging features, the app now also allows the sending of SMS messages with “a little Skype Credit.” Microsoft had been testing Skype Preview since the early months in 2016. The app is built off the company’s Universal Windows Platform (UWP) idea. This allows the same app to be synced and functional across all...

Microsoft’s Introduces New Who’s In iMessage App

Microsoft has debuted a new application for Apple’s iMessage service. Called ‘ Who’s In’ the app allows users to plan events with friends. Basically, the app lets people search for things to do, such as movies to see of places to eat. Custom events can also be created and sent to contacts. Who’s In lets users of iMessage share events with contacts. This type of app has already been tired by other companies and failed. However, Microsoft may be more interested in just testing Bing integration.  Users on iPhone can share these events with a “Who’s In” and the response back will be “What is this and why are you sending it to me”. Users can easily select an activity from a list of tabbed events. If you think this system is familiar, then you have probable used Google’s Who’s Down app. It was basically the same set up, so Who’s In is certainly in knock-off territory. That said, Google’s Who’s Down service was closed because it could not attract users. In...

Microsoft is continuing to detail some of the under-the-hood changes being made with the Windows 10 Creators Update. Today, the company is discussing the high-DPI scaling improvements that have been made. The changes and additions will be implemented fully when the company rolls out the Creators Update on April 11. In a blog post, Microsoft says the new high-DPI scaling improvements in Windows 10 will make multiple monitor setup for different resolutions easier. For users who run a desktop application that does not render on high-DPI displays, there is now a solution. Windows 10 Creators Update will run the application as a DPI-unaware process. Essentially, this means users can choose the new functionality in several options, as detailed below: Application:  This setting defaults the app to a per-monitor DPI awareness. Users may recognize this ability as it was previously known as “Disable display scaling on high-DPI settings.” System:  Windows’ stand...

Microsoft accidentally published the build on the hub, so we knew it was on its way. The contents of the build are unlikely to excite those who want new features. The Creators Update deals with the new goodies, this patch is for fixing. With that in mind there is a fix for a Surface Bluetooth problem and for McAfee Enterprise.
