Samsung may permanently disable Galaxy Note 7 phones in the US as soon as next week

Samsung appears to be planning to permanently disable Galaxy Note 7 units in the US with an update that would prevent the recalled phone from charging. It's hard to imagine anyone still carrying around a potentially explosive Samsung Galaxy Note 7 after the smartphone was recalled (twice), cancelled, and limited to 60 percent battery capacity. If someone in the US is still holding out against the carriers, Samsung, and common sense after all that, an OTA update will put any active Galaxy Note 7 devices to the sword. According to an image obtained by The Verge, an alert went out to at least one Note 7 owner on US Cellular today stating that, “As of December 15th, Samsung will modify the software to prevent the Galaxy Note 7 from charging. Samsung Galaxy Note7 customers who opt for Galaxy S7 or S7 edge get 50% discount on Galaxy S8 or Note8 in Korea

Samsung has announced a new upgrade offer for the Galaxy Note7 users in South Korea who had exchanged or going to exchange their phone for Galaxy S7 or the Galaxy S7 edge. Samsung says that the Galaxy Upgrade Program  will help the customers purchase the Galaxy S8 or Galaxy Note8 that will be released next year at up to 50% discount. Samsung is also offering 50% discount on LCD repair costs and fast track service for after-sales for these customers. Samsung said that the program is aimed to ‘lightening the burden’ for those who swap their Note 7 device for the Galaxy S7 or S7 edge. The S8 smartphone is scheduled to be released in February or March next year and the Note 8 phablet is expected to be launched in August or September next year. RIP Note 7:Samsung stops Note 7 production.

The writing on the cloud was clear and Samsung done what was inevitable has finally happened. Samsung has finally withdraw Note 7 from the shelves.No temporary halt in production or sales, but permanently discontinued. It was futile trying to resurrect the dead. Thankfully, the Korean giant has decided to put a full stop on this tragic saga by killing the Note 7 before it killed anyone. The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Samsung said in a filing with South Korean regulators that it would permanently cease sales of the device, and not just temporarily halt the production as it was reported. Galaxy Note 7 explodes in pocket, man sues Samsung

Samsung Electronics Co was sued on Friday by a Florida man who said he suffered severe burns after his Galaxy Note 7 smartphone exploded in his front pants pocket. The lawsuit by Jonathan Strobel may be the first in the United States by a Samsung phone user against the South Korean company over a battery defect linked to the Note 7. It was filed one day after Samsung recalled about 1 million Note 7s sold in the United States. Samsung has received 92 reports of batteries overheating in the United States, including 26 reports of burns and 55 reports of property damage, US safety regulators said. The company had no immediate comment on the lawsuit. Strobel, 28, of Boca Raton, said he was in a Costco store in Palm Beach Gardens on September 9 when his Note 7 exploded. He said the phone burned directly through his pants, resulting in severe burns on his right leg. Samsung’s New Problem Courier Companies Declining Galaxy Note 7 Packages

In the  Galaxy Note 7   replacement program,  Samsung  left out China since the Chinese  are said to be powered by  batteries from a different supplier . While 70% of the Galaxy Note 7 batteries came from Samsung SDI, the other 30% are supplied by Chinese based company called ATL. Samsung had officially said that only 1,858 units will be recalled in China which were sold under a testing scheme. Now the two Galaxy Note 7 devices that are exploded in China are said to be retail units and are purchased from JD.com. The new devices with the blue  S  letter are yet to be shipped; Samsung Australia issued an official statement saying the replacement units will be available from September 21st. Samsung to Suspend Galaxy Note 7 Sales After Battery Explosions

Update: Samsung starts Selling Note 7 in China, No Recall because of Different Battery Supplier.  Samsung also confirmed that only 24 units in every one million devices at a risk of catching fire. But in precautionary measures, the company is recalling all the Galaxy Note 7 Note devices. The confusion between the Samsung India and one of the local retailer resulted in selling one of the Note 7 units prior to the actual sale date in India. Now the company is trying to buy back the device and is even  willing to pay 3X the amount of what the customer paid .
