Qualcomm working with Reliance Jio, Chinese, Taiwanese ODMs and Indian handset firms to launch VoLTE feature phones
Qualcomm said that it is working with Reliance Jio and a number of Chinese original equipment makers, original device makers, along with Indian players like Micromax to launch 4G VoLTE feature phones based on its latest 205 Mobile platform, which has been designed and developed by its engineering team in India.
“The feature phone market is significant and it will continue to be significant in India. It is possible for brands to broaden their portfolios with VoLTE feature phone with LTE technology becoming pervasive and affordable. There will be a mass appeal,” James J. Cathey, senior vice president of Asia Pacific and India told ET. “We are raking pretty big blanket approach to build relationship around this form factor. We now have broader engagements with our partners.”
FIH/ MegaFone, Uniscope, Borqs,CKT Flex, HiPad, TSM, Viroyal, Huiye and Reliance Jio are working with Qualcomm to develop VoLTE feature phones for global as well as Indian market.
Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Jio is working Chinese original equipment makers to launch own and co-branded VoLTE feature phones in India. The 4G entrant is also said to be subsidising part of the selling price to make the 4G feature phones available at about Rs 1,000 (about $15). These devices are likely to come bundled with unlimited voice and video calling, besides digital content, ET previously reported.
Home-bred handset maker Micromax has already announced its first 4G VoLTE feature phone running on Qualcomm system on chip (SoC), Bharat 1, which it will launch at Rs 1999. Lava International had earlier this year launched India’s first VoLTE phone, Lava 4G Connect M1, at Rs 3,333. The device however runs on a Spreadtrum chipset.
A retail and unsubsidized VoLTE feature phone will be priced at $50 in India, which the executive termed as a mass market price point
