Reliance Jio Infocomm, who has Pan-India license and spectrum for 4G wireless services is eyeing to launch and Android-powered STB (Set Top Box) to disrupt the Indian DTH services.
Speaking about the yet-to-be-announced service, Jio will be offering STBs which will provide both broadband and television services. As said earlier, the STBs are powered by Android, which means that it will come bundled with Google Play services and some pre-installed games and apps as well.
Jio will facilitate outdoor customer premise equipment (CPE) which connects to the nearest tower of Jio and a wire will be connected to the house of users from the CPE. And, this wire will be connected to the STB to access Live Tv and broadband services as well.
Right from day one, Jio is facing stiff competition from India’s largest telecom operator, Bharti Airtel. Airtel is working on a hybrid DTH STB, which is said to provide online surfing and DTH service over Wi-Fi or maybe via Fiber cable. As we already know that Airtel is aggressively rolling out their V-Fiber Internet service to every corner of the country and this might well help the DTH service as well.
Airtel is making this move especially because of the continuous growth in online content in India and this device could revolutionize the entire Indian telecom sector.
It is also said that both the brands are partnering with digital content services such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Hotstar to provide the exclusive content.
Airtel, India’s largest telecommunications network announced that the Netflix app will be integrated into the Airtel’s set-top-box and helps users in streaming the content in lot easier way. Along with Airtel, Videocon also announced that the application would be integrated into their D2H. Also, Videocon announced that they would be deploying a dedicated button for Netflix in their STBs.
Aforesaid, Netflix also partnered with Vodafone and subscribers of Vodafone can adjust the payment in their monthly payment cycle and the service will be available for both prepaid and postpaid consumers.
There are no specific information regarding the launch date of these services but if they come with the rumoured features, it will be a game changer in the country.
