Microsoft Updates Windows 10 Mobile on Fast Ring

The latest Fast Ring release for Windows 10 Mobile is focused on fixing issues as part of Microsoft’s Patch Tuesday. There are no new features included.

The build was announced by Windows Insider Program head Dona Sarkar. This is a rare preview release that does not come with an extensive changelog of fixes. Also, there are no new features to speak of.

Instead, this is clearly a release to fix certain problems and was part of Microsoft’s Patch Tuesday. Sarkar says Windows 10 Mobile users get the following fixes with build 15223:

  • We fixed an issue where only the first VPN profile was being displayed in the VPN settings page via Settings > Network & wireless > VPN.
  • We fixed an issue where a meeting Time Zone was garbled in Chinese or Japanese.
  • Based on Insider feedback, we have changed “Phone Update” to “Windows Update” under Settings > Update & security.
Sarkar also added that the company is observing a problem with the WeChat app. The popular Chinese application will crash on launch, and this has not yet been fixed.

As well as rolling out the usual cumulative updates for Windows 10 on PC and mobile, Microsoft also made an unusual move yesterday.

The company announced it is updating Windows XP with a patch. This almost unheard of situation sees the company roll out a security fix for a platform it stopped supporting in 2014. The company said it was doing this to shore up the platform against the so-called WannaCry malware threat:

“In reviewing the updates for this month, some vulnerabilities were identified that pose elevated risk of cyberattacks by government organizations, sometimes referred to as nation-state actors, or other copycat organizations,” says Adrienne Hall, general manager of crisis management at Microsoft.

“To address this risk, today we are providing additional security updates along with our regular Update Tuesday service. These security updates are being made available to all customers, including those using older versions of Windows.”
