Future Samsung phone may feature screen-to-body ratio of 98 percent

Samsung have been working on curve displays for a long time and  now they have perfected it now in the Galaxy S8.The tedious work have resulted in infinity display.A new report claims future Samsung phones will features more curves but have to cross manufacturing hurdles.

According to the industry on April 24, Samsung Display and LG Display are concentrating their efforts on securing new lamination process technology that can realize the entire screen of the smartphone in full screen. Samsung Display had planned to apply the new process to the OLED iPhone, which was originally scheduled to be launched in the second half of this year, but it is said to postpone its commercialization to next year due to technical problems.

At present, lamination equipment mainly uses stick type. A method of attaching a film by partially dividing the substrate. Conventionally, a film is attached to an entire substrate and then a laser is used to cut the film. However, due to the heat generated by the laser, the film is stuck and it is difficult to realize an accurate size. The stick type partly divides the substrate and reduces the heat.

Recently, the lamination process has encountered difficulties in implementing all four sides of the panel in the form of edge. To implement the smartphone screen in full screen, you should apply the edge panel to both sides as well as the top and bottom sides.

The Galaxy S8 Infiniti display, recently launched by Samsung Electronics, minimizes the bezel by using full-screen dual-edge flexible OLED. It is similar in size to the previous Galaxy S7, but the display is 18% larger. In the industry, we see that the display takes up over 90% of the entire screen.

The next-generation display predicts that the edge will be applied to the top and bottom of the display, resulting in a four-sided edge-full screen with the bezel extreme. There have been studies on implementing a touch function to reduce the speaker, camera, and bottom home button on the top of the smartphone and utilize the entire display. If you apply the edge up and down, you can use more than 98% of the front of the smartphone as a display.

The problem is that when you implement the four-sided edge display, there is a blind spot where the touch function does not work at each corner. Existing lamination process technology does not support 4-sided edge. Both Samsung Display and LG Display are known to have trouble solving the problem.

It is also known that Apple is adopting a flat OLED flexible display instead of a dual-edge display in the first OLED iPhone to be introduced in the second half of this year. Samsung Display and Apple are working together to solve the problem, but it is not easy. LG Display is also researching and developing lamination technology for edge display of 4 sides.

An industry observer said, "The problem with the yield of flexible OLED panels to supply to Apple is the biggest portion of the lamination process technology problem," he said. "Even if the yield is low, we can supply the panel, We are trying to solve the problem. "
